Herbal Healing: Andrographis Herb - Mother Nature's Finest

May 21, 2020Roman Ladyzenskij

"For every illness, a herb has grown." He was so right, dear Father Sebastian Kneipp. The offerings of Mother Nature are incredibly vast – people around the globe have trusted the many properties and applications of certain plants for millennia.

And for most of us, it's completely normal to swear by the soothing effects of chamomile, fennel, or even peppermint when our stomach is upset. We also know of more exotic remedies like tea tree oil, recommended for acne, or cloves, said to help with toothaches. In short: Mother Nature has her own perfectly stocked medicine cabinet – and we at CLAV enthusiastically utilize her offerings.

Here we would like to introduce some of our most loyal allies

Andrographis Herb

Andrographis herb (Andrographis paniculata), also known as "Indian Echinacea," has come to us from afar. Its homeland is actually India and Sri Lanka, and it was introduced to Southeast Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. It is also cultivated in China and West Africa, among other places.

Andrographis herb has different names in different regions. The literal translation is "The stars fall from the sky"; in English, it is called "Killing Bitters" or "King of Bitter" due to its bitter taste; in Ayurvedic medicine, it is called "Kalamegha"; and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is called "Chuan Xin Lian."

Story

Andrographis herb has a millennia-old tradition in Ayurvedic medicine and TCM, where it is traditionally used for lung diseases and liver complaints. Exactly when it made its way to the Western world cannot be precisely proven. During World War II, it is said to have successfully combated amoebic dysentery in Southeast Asia. Our neighbors in Scandinavia – as well as the Americans – have certainly been huge fans for a long time.
Andrographis herb was included in the pharmacopoeia as a medicinal plant of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

How to use

Andrographis herb is an annual, herbaceous plant. It can grow up to one meter tall. The leaves sit on short petioles and are two to ten centimeters long. The plant's flowers are white with purple spots on the inside. In medicine, the cleaned and dried leaves as well as the root are used.
Physicians worldwide are dedicatedly researching this astonishing plant. Newer studies (from Sweden, Japan, Chile) are said to have shown that influenza viruses and respiratory infections can be effectively combated with Andrographis herb. In our CLAV IMMUN, it unfolds its effect in combination with other high-quality vitamins and trace elements.
