Do you want to reduce or eliminate your caffeine intake? But you don't want to miss out on the invigorating effect or aromatic taste of coffee and similar drinks? We present 5 coffee alternatives that will help you start your day energized, completely caffeine-free.

Why avoid caffeine and coffee?

For a long time, coffee was believed to have harmful health properties. Today, researchers know that coffee in moderation is not detrimental to health. On the contrary, various ingredients in coffee are thought to have health-promoting effects. Coffee and other naturally caffeinated beverages like matcha, green or black tea can therefore be part of your healthy diet.

Nevertheless, there are good reasons to cut back on coffee and caffeine or to completely abstain from it:

  • Stomach problems: The acid in coffee attacks the stomach lining. Some people may therefore experience stomach pain or heartburn from coffee, especially in the morning when their stomach is empty.
  • Coffee withdrawal: With regular coffee consumption, the body gets used to caffeine. If you then skip coffee, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and fatigue.
  • Stress: Caffeine not only keeps you awake, it also causes the body to release stress hormones. This temporarily raises blood pressure, which can contribute to discomfort and a feeling of inner restlessness. If you already feel tense, this can be even more unpleasant.
  • Sleep disturbances: Some people are particularly sensitive to stimulating caffeine. If you already sleep poorly, it helps to completely avoid caffeine to sleep peacefully at night, or to stop consuming caffeinated foods and drinks after the afternoon.
  • Environmental impact: Over 9.5 billion kilograms of coffee are produced annually, and the trend is rising. Cultivation, irrigation, processing, and transport routes also strain the environment. By drinking less coffee or choosing organically and fairly produced coffee, you can do something for the environment.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Although women can drink coffee during pregnancy and breastfeeding, they should not overdo it. Therefore, many look for alternatives during this time.

5 caffeine-free coffee alternatives

No matter what motivates you to drink less or no coffee, or even to quit coffee entirely, you don't have to sacrifice taste or an energy boost. These 5 coffee alternatives could be the solution to your dilemma. They have an invigorating effect or taste just as incredibly delicious as coffee.

Lupine Coffee

Lupine coffee is a coffee alternative made from the seeds of the lupine plant. The plant not only bears beautiful pink, white, and purple flowers, but its seeds are also rich in plant protein, vitamins, and trace elements. Since it is also native to Central Europe, it is a regional alternative to soy and also to coffee. In the EU, Germany is the largest growing area for sweet lupines. The roasted lupine seeds are ground into a powder that you can prepare like coffee grounds. For each cup, you need about 1 to 1.5 heaped teaspoons of lupine coffee, which you brew with hot water. This coffee alternative has a nutty, intense aroma, similar to coffee. It has been consumed in Europe as a coffee substitute for many years, for example, in mountain villages in South Tyrol, where the drink was also called "Bauerkaffee" (farmer's coffee). Lupine coffee is caffeine-free, regional, and can therefore be produced more environmentally friendly. It is also gentler on the stomach because it contains fewer irritating acids and is roasted more gently than bean coffee.

Ginseng Tea

The ginseng root has been used as a medicinal plant for millennia in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. It is credited with countless health-promoting properties – for example, for the treatment of cancer, depression, or chronic inflammation. However, these effects are not scientifically proven. What is certain, however, is that ginseng has a stimulating effect, strengthens the body's defenses, and helps to ward off fatigue. Therefore, you can use this medicinal plant as a coffee alternative. You can brew a tea from ginseng, or you can mix ginseng powder into your morning smoothie or muesli. With this natural energizer, you can start your day refreshed even without caffeine.

Coffee from Medicinal Mushrooms

A trendy drink from the USA is Mushroom Coffee, also known as coffee from medicinal mushrooms. These special mushrooms are said to have vitalizing effects. They are supposed to increase concentration and improve brain performance. In addition, mushroom coffee contains more antioxidants than conventional coffee. Therefore, it is assumed that it counteracts oxidative stress and strengthens the immune system. However, there are no conclusive studies on humans for this. Although mushroom coffee is currently becoming increasingly popular, it is not new. During World War II, it was drunk in Finland as a coffee substitute, because coffee was a rare commodity at that time, and the Chaga mushroom, known in German as Schiefer Schillerporling, was a well-tried medicinal mushroom native to Finland. Commercially available mushroom coffee is usually a mixture of instant coffee and medicinal mushroom extract, for example from Chaga, Reishi or Cordyceps. The practical thing is that it can be prepared as easily as instant coffee. However, this coffee alternative is often not caffeine- or coffee-free. However, there are also medicinal mushroom products without coffee.

Ginger Tea

Ginger is also a natural energizer. The intense spiciness of the ginger root stimulates circulation and thus has an invigorating effect. For example, you can brew an infusion from fresh ginger. Although this energizer does not taste like coffee, it is a caffeine-free and natural alternative to get you going in the morning. You can also combine your ginger tea with fresh peppermint. Peppermint is also attributed with an invigorating effect and adds extra aromas, color, and zest to your cup.

How to get energized

Aside from alternative coffee beverages, there's another completely different way to get yourself going in the morning: get your circulation moving. You can start your day with exercise. For example, go for a run or roll out your mat and practice yoga. Another option is ice bathing à la Wim Hof. Don't worry, you don't need an icy mountain lake outside your door or have to get into a tub full of ice cubes in the morning. It's enough to take a cold shower for a few seconds. This wakes you up, gets your circulation going, and is said not only to strengthen the immune system but also to lift your spirits. The ideal pick-me-up for all morning grumps.
